2. The Challenge

Adobe had recently released the new UI design tool called AdobeXD to the market. As part of an effort to raise awareness and attract customers to the new product, Adobe reached out to me. At this point the market was extremely saturated with a lot of new UI design software competing for the same user base.

3. The Project

One of the ways we decided to raise awareness and attract designers to AdobeXD was to offer free UI kits for XD. My job was to create an attractive UI kit that provides true value to other designers. I was also required to use AdobeXD to show the power of this new design software. The UI kit was posted on Behance.com, and since has been reposted and promoted dozens of times by Adobe in multiple platforms.

4. The Results

  • The Behance post has been viewed more than 29,000 times (as of March 2020).

  • The UI Kit has been downloaded thousands of times.

  • The UI Kit was featured as one of the best AdobeXD designs on Behance.com

  • Overall the post has Increased AdobeXD downloads and has help establish XD as a powerful UI design tool.

Strategy & Planning Process

The first step I took was to arrange a kickoff meeting with Adobe to discuss a strategy for this project. They knew they wanted to provide users with a free UI kit that provided true value. Something that hadn’t been done before. It became clear early on that there was an abundance of mobile and web UI kits out there, so we decided to explore the more unconventional yet popular displays.

That’s when I proposed the idea of a smartwatch UI kit.

From that point I started thinking about ways to provide a valuable smartwatch UI kit to the XD community. I didn’t want this to simply be a compilation of random UI elements that don’t have any sort of purpose to it. I wanted to show the kit in action, how they could be used in real life scenarios.

I decided to produce 6 sets of 5 screens. Each set would have a theme and would follow a logical flow. For example, one set was a food delivery service app. Another set was a surf forecasting app.

Once the overall strategy was put in place, it was time to hit the paper and start mocking up some of the screens / apps.

Obstacles

I realize once I started to mock up the different app flows that the 6 set of screens wouldn’t be enough. They didn’t encapsulate all of the types of UI a designer creates on a regular basis. So I decided to supplement those app screens with other UI sets. They weren’t necessarily a part of a specific app, but had a common theme.

The Designs

In terms of visual designs, I decided to make this kit as generic as possible so it could be used in large array of use-cases. At the same time I wanted the kit to have personality and to be eye-catching.
